Arsenal fan arrested for throwing red wine at Manchester United bench - originally posted on Soccerlens.com
Of all the talking points from Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Arsenal at the weekend, one of the most bizarre was a fan being arrested for throwing red wine at the United substitutes’ bench.
It was initially reported that a fan at the Emirates Stadium had thrown an object in the direction of Louis van Gaal, his players and staff.
Arsenal were quick to respond with official statements, promising to come down hard on the spectator if he was proven guilty.
Widespread reports have confirmed that the object in question was red wine, and that members of United’s staff were splashed by the liquid.
The incident occurred when Kieran Gibbs’ own goal opened the scoring and the individual who threw the wine has been identified using CCTV footage.
“A male was arrested at the stadium for throwing an object towards the Manchester United bench after the first Manchester United goal,” said an Arsenal spokesman.
“There will be full co-operation between Arsenal and the Met Police – we do not tolerate anti-social behaviour. If found guilty, individual will also be banned by club.”
This has not been the first instance of controversy surrounding away dugouts at the Emirates Stadium.
Back in 2008, former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson had been vocal in his criticism of the position of the substitutes’ bench at the stadium.
“It is too open for my liking,” said Ferguson. “It should not happen when you build a modern stadium. You need tin helmets.
“It is a weakness in the planning that you don’t provide safety for the visiting substitutes and staff.”
